The Week in AI
Edition 04
UK / Service SMEs
AI stops talking and starts operating.
Five days, one direction of travel. Claude moved into small-business back offices through QuickBooks, HubSpot and PayPal. OpenAI put Codex on a phone and pushed GPT-5.5 out the door. The chat window is no longer the product.
Top stories
5 to knowClaude lands in the back office. SMBs get a connector stack.
Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business with direct integrations into QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, plus 15 ready-made workflows for invoicing, cash forecasting, month-end close, contract review and marketing prep. The pitch is execution inside the tools you already pay for, not another chat tab to switch into.
Optimus angle
Pick one workflow this month. List the steps on a single page. Map who approves what. Then plug in the connector and measure the hours saved over four weeks. That number, not the feature list, is your business case.
Codex goes mobile. GPT-5.5 ships in the background.
OpenAI put Codex on the ChatGPT mobile app, with live terminal output, diffs and approvals streaming from a phone while the agent works on a Mac. GPT-5.5 also shipped, with Mindstream and others reporting meaningful gains for multi-step agentic tasks and tool use. Claude still leads for coding and long Office documents, but the gap on agent work narrows.
Optimus angle
Treat your phone as the approval seat, not the keyboard. Set up one Codex or Claude routine that can run overnight or while you are in a meeting. Review the diffs on the train, not at your desk.
Voice AI takes a step toward a real-time front desk.
OpenAI launched GPT-Realtime-2 with reasoning baked in, live translation across 70+ languages and streaming transcription, all in one stack. The early use cases are bilingual support, real-time call summaries and voice agents that can actually follow a multi-step request without losing thread.
Optimus angle
Pilot a real-time transcript on your inbound calls before you touch a voicebot. The transcript alone reveals where customers drop off, repeat themselves or get bounced. Fix the script first, automate second.
The harness around the model is doing the work.
Dharmesh and others reframed the AI stack around what surrounds the model. Custom instructions, skills, plugins, MCP, APIs and CLIs. MCP in particular is being described as the USB-C of AI integrations, letting one tool server work across compatible systems rather than rebuilding the same integration in every app.
Optimus angle
Stop asking which model is best. Audit which of your tools speak MCP, where your context lives and who owns the connectors. The team with the cleanest harness will out-execute the team with the newest model.
Institutions push back on uncredited AI.
ArXiv said it will ban authors for a year if they submit work produced entirely by AI without proper attribution. Princeton reinstated supervised exams for the first time since 1893, citing AI and open tabs as reasons the honour system no longer holds. The Musk v. Altman trial closed in California, with governance and control of AI labs in the dock. The OpenAI v. Apple dispute over Siri integration is heading toward legal action. The mood music has changed. Disclosure, oversight and accountability are now mainstream questions.
Optimus angle
Write a one-page AI usage note for your clients and your team. State where AI is in your process, what humans still sign off, and what data does not leave your systems. You will need it sooner than you think.
From the Insurance Desk
Sector signal for brokers, motor claims and credit hire companies.
Item 01
CFC pilots agentic AI inside underwriting.
CFC launched Lane Assist, an agentic AI underwriting pilot that takes broker submissions out of email and turns them into quote recommendations in specialty lines. It sits alongside Avantia signalling a fuller agentic operating model after a record 2025, and the LMA publishing an AI adoption toolkit to help Lloyd's managing agents build governance frameworks. The market is starting to standardise how it adopts AI, not just whether.
Optimus angle
Brokers should map their submission journey end to end this month. Where the agentic insurer wants clean data, the broker that supplies it wins faster quotes and better terms. Untidy submissions will quietly cost you market share.
Item 02
GoCompare launches inside ChatGPT. Distribution shifts.
GoCompare unveiled a ChatGPT app for car, van and home insurance comparison, putting a national price-comparison brand directly inside the country's most-used AI chat interface. Insurance Post described it as a high-visibility deployment of conversational AI in UK insurance distribution. Brokers are simultaneously losing share to direct insurers on traditional price comparison sites. The price comparison page is no longer the only front door. Conversational AI is becoming a live distribution layer for personal lines, SME and motor.
Optimus angle
Brokers and motor claims handlers should ask one question this week: if a client compares cover by talking to ChatGPT, where does your name appear in that answer? Audit how AI assistants describe your firm, your sector and your competitors today. The brands that show up clearly in those answers will win the next renewal cycle.

The Optimus Take
Last week was not about a new model. It was about AI moving from advisor to operator. Claude is now inside the small-business stack. Codex is on a phone. CFC is running an agentic pilot inside a Lloyd's underwriting line. The conversation has shifted from 'what could AI do' to 'where do we let it do it, and under what controls.'
That shift puts pressure on operators, not on engineers. The new advantage is owning the workflow map. Knowing which steps are repetitive, rules-based and resource-intensive. Knowing which approval gates stay human. Knowing what your business looks like when a tool actually finishes the task instead of just suggesting one.
- StrategyDecide which approval gates stay human before any agent touches a task.
- OperationsPick one back-office workflow this month. Map it, connect Claude or Copilot, then count the hours saved.
- ServiceTell clients where AI now sits in your process. Trust grows when people know the human still signs off.
“The week AI stopped suggesting and started doing.”
