The Week in AI
Edition 05
UK / Service SMEs
Visibility is shifting from the search bar to the AI answer.
This week the AI story moved from inside the business to in front of it. Google made Search an agent-style task engine. Practitioners reframed brand visibility around AI citations, not blue links. Searchable launched analytics for AI bot traffic. For UK service SMEs, the customer's first impression is no longer the homepage. It is the AI answer.

5 to knowDiscovery is shifting from blue links to AI citations.
Chris Donnelly and others made the case this week that SEO no longer guarantees visibility. The new game is being cited inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. The framework being pushed: authority, relevance, and extractability. Searchable also launched LLM Analytics, tracking AI bot visits and pages crawled alongside conventional traffic.
Optimus angle
Run your five most common customer questions through ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity this week. Score each answer. Does your firm appear? Is a competitor named? Is the answer accurate? Write the missing content this month. SEO alone no longer guarantees the customer finds you.
Google turns Search into a task engine.
Google I/O launched Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini Omni, and previewed a Search overhaul that moves it from answer box to agent-style task engine, with generative UI and agent interactions sitting where blue links used to be. Whether consumers fully adopt the new format is open. The customer access path is already changing.
Optimus angle
Re-test how your business shows up in Google's AI overview this week. The answer the customer sees at the top is no longer the page that ranks in blue links. Fix the gap before your next campaign cycle, or your spend will be paying to win a battle that is no longer being fought there.
Perplexity ships "Computer" for no-code AI operations.
Perplexity launched Computer, a product that runs multiple frontier models in parallel and connects across thousands of apps. The pitch is no-code AI operations for founders and small teams, with a focus on automation and competitive intelligence. Distinct from last edition's Perplexity Personal Computer for Mac. This one is the orchestrator, not the desktop agent.
Optimus angle
Map a process in your business that touches at least three tools (CRM, email, spreadsheet, for example). Test whether a single agent can run the loop end-to-end. If yes, you have just removed a context-switch tax from your team's week.
Anthropic positions Claude as a work engine, not a chatbot.
Anthropic spent the week framing Claude as enterprise infrastructure, not a chat product. Claude Cowork was pitched as a desktop agent for multi-step knowledge work, Opus 4.7 was said to improve agent reliability, and the Code with Claude event in London reinforced the same message. The centre of gravity is moving from chat to scheduled execution.
Optimus angle
Take one weekly chat thread your team already runs with an AI. Rewrite it as a scheduled job that produces a finished output, not a conversation. Track what stops landing on your desk by Friday. That delta is your first piece of evidence that the chat window is no longer the product.
Defensive AI takes a step forward. Supply-chain risk catches up.
Anthropic's unreleased Claude Mythos Preview reportedly helped partners uncover more than 10,000 vulnerabilities across software projects, with Anthropic holding the model back over misuse concerns. The same week, GitHub confirmed around 3,800 internal repositories were stolen after an employee installed a poisoned VS Code extension. Defensive AI is getting more useful and the attack surface is getting wider. Both at once.
Optimus angle
For every AI tool your team uses, ask one question this month. Who in your business is responsible if it leaks data? Owner-by-name beats policy-by-document. If you cannot name the owner, that tool is shadow tech, and shadow tech is what breaks first.

Acrisure cuts 2,250 roles and points at AI.
Acrisure announced approximately 2,250 job reductions, citing AI and automation reshaping operations. Avantia Group, separately, said it is accelerating toward an agentic AI operating model after a strong 2025. Two signals in the same week that AI is now being used to justify org changes inside large brokers, not just pilots.
Optimus angle
The pilot conversation is over. The next conversation is operating model. Draw the map of which roles in your firm will be redesigned, which will be retired, and which will be created over the next twelve months. The firms that draw their own map will outpace the firms that wait for someone else to draw it for them.
Item 02
Davies puts AI inside personal injury claims valuations.
Davies deployed new AI capabilities in its personal injury claims management system to automate valuations and reduce handling times. Verisk also restructured its UK and Ireland operation to join claims and underwriting data under one unit, opening the door to joined-up automation across the motor claims lifecycle.
Optimus angle
For claims handlers and credit hire teams, the immediate question is where in your case lifecycle a valuation model would land first. Hire-rate disputes, BHR challenges and period-of-hire arguments all have repeatable valuation logic. That is where the leverage is, and that is where larger players are heading first.

The Optimus Take
This week the AI conversation moved from inside the business to in front of it. Google rewrote Search into a task engine. Practitioners reframed visibility around AI citations. Anthropic positioned Claude as a work engine. The unifying signal: the moment a customer goes looking for an answer, the answer they meet first is no longer your website.
For UK service SMEs the implication is practical, not theoretical. Your homepage still matters, but it is no longer the first impression. The AI overview is. The ChatGPT answer is. The Perplexity citation is. The firms that check how they show up there this month will compound a quiet advantage. The firms waiting until "AI search" is a tab on their reporting dashboard will be answering follow-up questions to conversations they were not part of.
- StrategyDecide which two customer questions your firm has to win the AI answer for, every time. Build content, authority and citations around those two.
- OperationsAudit how your firm currently shows up in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI overview. Score each answer for accuracy, completeness, and whether your name appears.
- ServiceBrief your customer-facing team that the first conversation may already have happened inside an AI. They will be answering follow-up questions, not first ones. Train accordingly.
“The AI answer is the new homepage. If your firm is not in it, the customer never reaches you.”
